The rain poured down on the street. It was quiet, empty. No signs of life. Everyone's curtains were closed, everyone's lights off. It was dead here. If it weren't for me the place would have been considered a ghost town. The streets were blocked off and filled with cars. No one could drive through. God help anyone who came here unprepared. Under the cars was water, every street here completely flooded. The sun was entirely blocked out by the thick gray clouds of the thunderstorm, casting a gloomy light over the city.
Blood mixed with the water that ran down the roof. I stood over the creature, leaving my sword buried in its chest. I watched as the thing opened it's eyes again, and let out a horrible screech.
I ripped my weapon out of it's body and stabbed it back down into it's head, over and over. When the thing stopped writhing, I ripped the blade out of it's forehead. "You'd better be dead you son of a bitch."
You see reader, these things aren't anything anyone has seen before. They aren't zombies, they aren't a band of serial killers, they aren't superhumans, they are monsters. The kind that haunt your nightmares and have only been seen in horror movies.
We call them screamers. They don't look anything like normal humans, but they have the same body types. Screamers have all black hair, and no skin. No "downstairs parts" either. The only eyes they have are black sockets where they should be. Although about as tall as us humans, they are extremely agile. Agile meaning jumping 13 or so feet in the air and running of speeds up to 15 mph. And not to mention they eat human hearts. They leave the bodies lying there with their chests ripped open, lungs and guts spilled all over the pavement, but never any heart left in the body. Surprising enough they are as strong as the average human.
When they see their prey they let out the most horrible, earsplitting, heart wrenching, satanic scream ever known to this planet. It signals the other screamers to come, tells them that prey is in the vicinity.
For once our species is the hunted, after so many years of being the hunter.
As you can imagine these things are extremely difficult to kill, being as fast as they are, and only being able to be killed with a blow to the head. No one is sure how they reproduce, but we know they have. Because the numbers have at leas tripled over the weeks. they don't turn their victims either.
I sat down next to the screamer and slid down the slick roof tiles on my butt until both my legs hung off the side of the three story building. I wrapped my scarf tighter around my neck in order to secure the warmth inside my thin hoodie.
I jumped down landing lightly on my feet on the pavement below. Normally it would have broken my legs, but lets just say it takes an I amazing trainer to teach that.
I looked around in every direction before moving an inch. I quickly crossed the street weaving in between cars as I went along, my soft soled boots making no sound as they sloshed through the flooded streets. Almost everyone who was still alive had these a pair of these. They were water proof, and provided a silent way to get around- as long as you knew how to do it. If you were still alive then you have to know how to be stealthy.
I continued to cross the street until I got to the other side. I crept down the sidewalk, the only sound around me the rain drumming on the
rooftops above and pavement below. I snuck into an alleyway, sword bouncing off my side in time with my footsteps. My hair fell into my eyes from the bun that was hidden under my hood.
Once I spotted the air duct I called home, I quickly traveled over to it, taking off the vent. I crawled through and placed the small entryway back where it belonged.
I crawled through the tunnel for about five minutes climbing down various ladders until finally the vent opened up into a small room.
I dropped into it while pulling my hood down. This place was underground. just a random, secret underground room I had found while hiding from a screamer in the vent. No one inhabited it, therefore, this was the place I called home.
